More about Long Market

Długi Targ, one of the oldest and most prestigious streets in Gdańsk, became known as the Royal Route thanks to the parades and celebrations that have taken place here since the 15th century. The tenement houses that decorate it were inhabited by wealthy merchants and patricians, which added to its splendor. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the street was known for its meat trade, as well as the “Piglet Market” held between Neptune’s Fountain and the town hall.

history of the place

Long Market

Długi Targ in Gdańsk is a place with a rich history, dating back to the 13th century, when it functioned as the main merchant route. After the invasion of the Teutonic Knights, it was still the center of city life. The street, then called Longa Platea, has witnessed numerous historical events, including parades honoring royal visits and the site of executions following the Lutheran rebellion in 1526. The tenement houses that flank it were the residences of the wealthiest residents of Gdańsk, which only confirms its prestige. In modern times, Długi Targ, full of restaurants and cafes, is a place where residents and tourists can feel the historical atmosphere of Gdańsk, while admiring the Main Town Hall and other historic tenement houses reconstructed after the war destruction.
